Programs (updated June 10, 1998) These files include programs that allow the user to convert the raw data files into SAS datasets or SPSS system files, estimate sampling variance using the jackknife repeated replication method, and convert item response codes to score values.
Data Files These files include the written asessment data, performance assessment data, background questionnaire data (for students, teachers, and schools), coding reliability data, information to link teachers to students, and sampling weights.
Data Almanacs (updated April 5, 1999) The data almanacs are text files that display unweighted summary statistics for each participating country for each variable in the background questionnaires.
Code Books The codebook files contain all information related to the structure of the data files as well as the source, format, descriptive labels, and response option codes for all variables.
Test-Curriculum Matching Analysis (TCMA) These files contain data collected for the TIMSS test-curriculum matching analysis.
New Scale Scores (updated April 5, 1999) These scores were computed using a different psychometric model (3 parameter model) from the one originally used (1 parameter model) and are set on the scale that will be used to measure trends in mathematics and science in future TIMSS assessments.
File Layout (Text file)
The TIMSS international database contains a myriad of educational variables collected in more than 40 countries, including achievement results in mathematics and science for third-, fourth-grade students (Population 1), seventh-, and eighth-grade students (Population 2), the final year of secondary school students (Population 3), their teachers, and their school principals.
The database is divided by population and country and is in ASCII format. Data files are compressed using the ZIP compression utility. These files can be decompressed using the WinZip utility. Documentation for the database is available in Acrobat PDF format.
The TIMSS International Database is available on CD-ROM from the IEA Secretariat. Contact:
