TIMSS and PIRLS

With 50 participating countries and 11 benchmarking entities spanning the globe, the PIRLS 2016 International Results in Reading provide a comprehensive picture of how well fourth grade children can read. About 319,000 students were assessed in 2016, providing 15 years' worth of trend data to countries that have participated since the assessment began in 2001. Watch the video above for highlights on international achievement results, and visit the report to view a video for results on the home and school contexts for teaching and learning reading, or to explore the vast amount of PIRLS data.

The 2016 cycle also marked the inauguration of ePIRLS, a computerized assessment of online reading comprehension that monitors how well fourth grade students read, interpret, and critique online information in an environment that looks and feels like the Internet. Try the assessment out for yourself — read online texts and navigate through websites, clicking through tabs and pop-up windows and watching animated diagrams, before answering questions posed by a teacher avatar — or watch a video of ePIRLS example tasks.
